What is a Mail Server?
A mail server is a computer system that receives and sends emails with the help of SMTP, IMAP or POP3 protocol. Mail servers and web servers are combined in a single machine and offered as a package deal. But large internet service providers and public email services make use of dedicated hardware.
A computer system needs mail server software in order to perform as a mail server. Such software will make it possible for the system administrator to generate and manage email accounts for domains that are hosted on the server.
